Don’t Google this
Apr 21, 2022Google rocks.
It can make you an *expert* on anything.
But sometimes Google is wrong.
Say you want to know how much you can charge in late fees.
If you’re not a Legal Plan Member, you can’t just call a lawyer for the answer (without getting billed).
So you Google it.
And find this:
- $20 or 20% of rental fee
- $10/month if rent less than $1,000
- $10 on first $500 + 5%
That’s confusing… who is right?
Turns out, they’re all wrong (unless you’re in Cook County)!
Go ahead - rub your eyes and read that again.
The top 3 Google searches got the law wrong (because, duh).
Here’s the deal:
Illinois does not limit “late rent fees.”
Don’t get greedy.
But don’t short yourself because some randos on the interwebs gave you bad info.
